She’s a mother of 2 in her mid 30s moving to London to be with her military husband who was just transferred there. My girlfriend would like to get her a going away gift that would be perfect. I’ve been there once and I know the lifestyle there can be drastically different than that of Texas but I cannot come up with anything. Any suggestions?

Well, obviously it’s a lifetime supply of a famous brand of toothpaste. Because, you know, we never brush our teeth.

If you can find a small machine that makes ice, that would be a huge gift for someone UK bound. Laugh at me if you will, but they do not serve or use ice in the UK (or most of Europe) which will be a huge culture shock for her coming from TX.

This is one that is small enough to transport –

I don’t know about the ice comment. I bartended in England for 6 months after college and there is plenty of ice served. Guide books on London or England that fit her interests are one idea. Also, there are books out there for Yanks living abroad to read and help their adjustment. More practically, a high quality windbreaker/rain coat or a nice pair of comfortable waterproof shoes would work. She will be seeing many more rainy days and likely be walking and using public transportation a whole lot more in London compared to Texas.

It kinda depends on where she is going, but make sure she has a Costco membership, which is easier to acquire in the States than the UK. Yes, Costco are here and they do tires as well. My wife had hers and transferred it over to UK membership at the renewal date. Apart from that, maybe one of those portable natural light machines. She will almost certainly miss the big skies and the sunshine.

How about a “Texas C.A.R.E. Package”. BBQ sauce, chili mix, dried pinto beans, chip dip packets, canned jalapenos, etc. She won’t find any of those over there!
